Sketching the Rarest Eagle in Asia: The Philippine Eagle
The Philippine Eagle is one of the most remarkable birds I have ever sketched — and it has one of the most extraordinary names in the bird world. For many years, it was known as the Monkey-Eating Eagle, a name that came from reports of it taking monkeys as prey. Today, it is more appropriately known as the Philippine Eagle — Pithecophaga jefferyi — a species found only in the Philippines. In this episode of Sketchbook Birder, I am adding the Philippine Eagle to my growing collection of bird sketches. I wanted to capture its enormous bill, powerful talons, long crest and that intense expression that makes this eagle so distinctive. It is also the national bird of the Philippines, having been declared so in 1995. The Philippine Eagle is critically endangered, with habitat loss being one of its greatest threats. Seeing this magnificent bird in the wild is a privilege, but protecting the forests it depends on is even more important. This sketch is part of my mission to draw 200 must-see birds from around the world — one bird at a time, learning something new about each species along the way. The Spoon-billed Sandpiper is one of Asia’s most remarkable shorebirds, and one of the first birds on my list of 200 must-see birds of Asia. In this episode of **Sketchbook Birder**, I travel to find this small and highly threatened bird, then sketch it to capture the feature that makes it so distinctive: its spoon-shaped bill. For me, birdwatching is not only about adding another species to a list. It is about finding the bird, understanding where it lives, meeting the best local guides, and taking time to look closely enough to sketch what makes it special. The Spoon-billed Sandpiper has a very restricted range and depends on coastal wetlands along its migration route. Finding one is a reminder of how much biodiversity can depend on protecting a few important places. Some birds stay with you long after the sighting is over. The Scarlet Minivet is one of them. In this sketch, I am not trying to reproduce every detail of the bird. I am sketching what I remember — the colours, the shape, the movement, and the few details that stayed with me after seeing it in the wild. Birding and sketching have something in common: both make you slow down and look properly. This is my way of combining the two — remembering a bird through a sketch rather than simply recording it in a photograph. Birding + sketching. Look closely. Remember what stays with you.
